Bathroom sewage lifting

When a bathroom with a toilet has no gravity drain, a sewage lifting pump with a cutter or a large solids passage can move wastewater to the main sewer.

The upper drawing shows a lifting unit serving a kitchen remote from the building’s wastewater stack. The lower drawing shows wastewater from a basement shower, toilet and washbasin entering a lifting unit and discharging to the municipal sewer. Both examples show 5 m of lift. The discharge rises above the main wastewater pipe before joining it to prevent backflow. The shower base in the diagram is raised 10–15 cm so wastewater flows into the pump by gravity.
